In order to achieve that innocent, yet sexy, classic 50’s Pin Up look it is crucial that you get the hair, makeup, clothing and accessories right. When done correctly this look can’t be mistaken for any other!

A key secret to getting a dewy fresh complexion is to always start by applying a moisturizer to your face. Next apply a fair color (either cream or liquid) foundation using your fingers or a make up sponge to distribute it evenly. Using a liquid concealer under your eyes can hide undesirable dark circles. Dust your nose lightly with powder. Avoid putting powder under your eyes as this can enhance any fine lines in that area. Apply a light pink rosey color blush to the apples of your cheeks being careful to blend along the cheek bone so that it looks like a natural glow. If you apply too much blush use a cotton ball to remove the excess. It is important that you use peaches, browns, crèmes, pinks, white and natural tone eye shadows. A dark brown should be used in the creases of your lids. Blend using a Q-Tip. Black eyeliner should always be used on the top eyelids. You may want to use an eyelash curler. You can use either use fake eyelashes or generously coat the top lashes in black mascara. Always pluck and brush your eyebrows into a nice shape. Line your lips and use any matching shade of red or dark pink lipstick. You can add a beauty mark with a black eyebrow pencil but it is not necessary unless you are trying to get the Marilyn Monroe look.

Having the right hair cut and style is essential for a true 50’s hairdo. However you can still achieve the look with your current style if you know some tricks. Hair was styled with or without bangs and usually wavy or curly. Long straight hair can also be worn in a pony tail with a scarf. The Bettie Page and Marilyn Monroe hair styles are especially popular. If you are thinking about going blonde you should definitely hire a professional hairdresser.

If you have really straight hair and want to make it curly, then you can buy some pink sponge rollers from your local beauty supply store. Wash and condition your hair, apply an anti-frizz serum, then roll the wet hair into the curlers. Leave them in until they dry or sleep in them over night.

If your hair is already curly or wavy then just use hot rollers and hairspray. Let them cool in your hair before removing them. Don’t use a brush, instead loosen the curls with your fingers and add more hairspray. Other options are to use pin curls or a curling iron. Try adding a flower, bow or headband. Of course if you hire a hairdresser to cut and style your hair you will get the best results. Be sure to bring pictures of your favorite pin up hairstyles which you can find on the internet.

Classic 50’s bombshell clothing can be found in vintage stores as well as on ebay and online specialty stores and brands like Stop Staring. Search the internet for 50’s, vintage, bombshell, pin up or Rockabilly clothing. Choose from Hollywood bombshell dresses, tight fuzzy sweaters, cardigan sets, sweetheart necklines, wiggle dresses, full gathered or pencil skirts, floral and polka dot swing dresses, Capri pants, and vintage swimsuits. Black fishnets or seamed hose with garters and peeptoe shoes complete this look. Hair and neck scarves were also popular during this period. Rhinestones, pearls and beads are good choices for jewelry. Don’t forget the leopard print handbag! Vintage fur stoles and white gloves are perfect for formal attire.

This look is fun, sexy and very glamorous. You are sure to love the attention that you will get as well as the way these clothes will make you feel!
